YOUTH QUILT ENTRIES – New for Maine Quilts 2024

  • A new Janome sewing machine, provided by Seams Sew Perfect in Madison, will be awarded to the first 10 youths who enter a quilt in the Youth category. Quilt entries are time stamped on the web and will be processed in that order.
  • To be eligible to win a sewing machine, entrants must be at least 7 years old on February 1, 2024 and under the age of 18 on May 15, 2024. For other entries in the Youth Category, the entrant must be under the age of 18.
  • To be eligible to win a sewing machine, quilts must be no larger than 62″ x 72″. Other entries in the Youth Category may be any size.
  • The entrant must be the creator of the quilt. The quilting may be done by another party.
  • There is a lifetime limit of one (1) sewing machine that can be awarded to the same child.
  • Qualified winners will be notified in advance of the awards ceremony and must be present to receive their awards. Proof of age may be required. 

Additional guidelines for quilt entry:

  • Entrants are not required to be Pine Tree Quilters Guild members in order to submit a quilt.
  • All quilt entries must be submitted not later than May 15, 2024. Quilt entries submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than May 15, 2024. No late entries will be accepted. 
  • If you do not receive an email confirmation within 24 hours after submitting an entry, check your spam/junk folder, try submitting the form again, or contact the Quilt Registrar to verify your entry.
  • A quilt may be entered in only one Division.
  • Only 100 quilts will be accepted in the Judged Quilts Division. 
  • An individual may enter a combined total of four quilts.
    • An individual is limited to the entry of two quilts in the Judged Quilts Division.
    • An individual is limited to the entry of one item in the Theme Challenge Division. 
  • Quilts may not have been previously exhibited at Maine Quilts except by special request.
  • Original or Traditional quilts may be offered for sale. Interested buyers can fill out a “Quilt for Sale Contact Information Form” at the quilt show information table so that the quilt maker can contact potential buyers after the quilt show.
  • If you used a pattern or other designer’s work protected by copyright, permission to display your quilt is required, and source information must be listed. This includes published or unpublished patterns or designs, quilts you made from a pattern provided to you in a workshop, kits containing a pattern, or blocks of the month. Check publications or websites for “terms for use” or a similar statement for specific permission to display. If in doubt, ask for permission.
  • Other instances that may require permission to display:
    • Embroidery designs you purchased or “free” designs you downloaded. 
    • “Free” clip art, “free” quilt patterns, or other pictures you found online. 
    • Advertising or other pictures you found in a publication. 
    • The designer has passed away. Generally speaking, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. You may need to seek permission from the designer’s estate.

Quilt Pickup
  • Maine Quilts has a Blanket Permission list of designers/publishers who have already granted permission to display. 
  • The submission of any quilt is deemed to include a statement that the quilter has obtained written permission from any holder of a copyright for the design or other elements of the quilt. Such permission will permit the quilter to display the quilt publicly and allow it to be photographed. Maine Quilts reserves the right, in its discretion, to ask any quilter to furnish a copy of such permission. This applies to chapter/group challenge entries as well as individual entries.
  • All quilts, including chapter/group challenge quilts, must contain quilting, except those made by children or those traditionally not quilted, such as crazy quilts or Cathedral Windows. 
  • Each quilt must have a label that includes the quilter’s name and title of the quilt and is sewn onto the quilt back.
  • New for 2024: All quilts, regardless of size, must have a hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt, except those pinned to a backing as part of a group challenge. Each quilt must have a hanging sleeve with at least a 4” opening and have top and bottom sewn or safety pinned securely to the quilt back.
    • Top of sleeve must be no more than 88” from the bottom of the quilt. 
    • Entries received without sleeves or sleeves improperly attached will not be accepted.
  • Chapter Challenge and Group Entry Guidelines and forms are available online or from the Quilt Registrar.
  • Chapter challenge/group mini-challenges must be sewn or pinned to a backing provided by chapter/group. The backing must have a label with Challenge Contact Name and Challenge Title. Backing must be no longer than 88”. 
  • Quilts that require special handling (fragile embellishments, special hanging apparatus, cannot be folded, etc.) must be approved prior to entry by the Quilt Registrar. Framed pieces will not be accepted.
  • Maine Quilts reserves the right to refuse entries that cannot be photographed for Maine Quilts archival purposes, are not suitable for the general audience, have sharp objects or do not meet the entry guidelines. 
  • Entrants are solely responsible for insuring their quilt(s).

DO NOT DELIVER OR SHIP YOUR QUILT(S) AT THIS TIME.

  • Entrants are responsible for:
    • Delivering their quilt(s) to their selected site on Saturday, July 20 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
      • Delivery sites are NOT prepared to accept quilts at any other time; please do not ask them.
      • Each quilt must be delivered in a separate cloth bag marked with the entrant’s name, address and phone number. (See “Quilt Delivery and Return” on the website for complete information.) OR
    • Shipping quilts to arrive July 8-18. See (“Quilt Delivery and Return” on the website for complete information.)
  • Each entrant (except for shipped quilts) will receive their receipt(s), quilt number(s) and pick up number on quilt Delivery Day. If you receive more than one pickup number, use the lowest number to pick up all your quilts.
  • No work may be withdrawn prior to the close of the show on Saturday, July 27.

Entrants are responsible for picking up their quilts at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, July 27, between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. or making arrangements to have them shipped back. Contact Mary Reynolds at searsportquilter@gmail.com to make arrangements to have your quilt(s) shipped back to you.
