Collection of quilts by Robin Long of Robin Ruth Design from 2015 to present.

Out of her desire to make a mariner’s compass quilt for her submarine officer husband in 1992, Robin used her problem-solving skills to design a rudimentary ruler for making strip pieced compass blocks. It would be 20 years later when she took her original ruler and started reimagining it into new rulers and a new quilting business venture that she started in 2015.

The quilts in this exhibit showcase the diversity and creativity that Robin uses to design mariner’s compass quilt patterns, appealing to quilters both traditional and modern. She likes to say that she is bringing the mariner’s compass block into the 21st century with a fresh take on both her strip piecing technique and innovative designs.

Robin draws design inspiration from her love of nature and art that she encounters at her rural home in Washington state on her family’s working cattle ranch and from her travels around the US and the world. She enjoys working with fabric companies to help showcase their new collections and make their fabrics sing.

She loves mixing her compass blocks with other traditional quilt elements and provides other techniques along with her rulers and method for making these quilts accessible to all quilters. Nothing makes her happier than seeing quilters being successful with her rulers and creating quilts they never thought would be possible. Where will your compass take you?
