Mary W. Kerr

Mary W. Kerr is an American Quilt Society certified appraiser and a long time quilter. She grew up in a family of quilters and has been teaching since 1987. She currently lectures and conducts workshops that focus on quilt history and the preservation of antique textiles.
In addition, she is the owner of Pieced of Olde, a small business that specializes in restoration and repair of antique textiles.

Mary and her husband Ralph currently live outside of Washington, DC with their three wonderful children and two small dogs.

She is an active member of the Professional Association of Appraisers – Quilted  Textiles (PAAQT), the American Quilt Study Group (AQSG), American Quilter’s Society, Cabin Branch Quilters, Quilters Unlimited, Mason Dixon QPN, the Virginia Quilt Consortium, the Quilt Professionals Network, MMS and several quilt dating groups in her area. She is currently working with the DAR museum and conducting private research.

206 Vintage Challenge

All Levels; Sewing Machine

This is a fast paced workshop that is designed to challenge participants to create a small quilt using a surprise mix of vintage blocks, fabrics, buttons and trims. Students will discover their inner creativity as they are given permission to play within a limited choice of vintage materials. Additional sample projects.

This workshop touches on the basics of restoration, conservation and repair of antique quilts. The workshop will include discussion and trunk show of historical repairs. The hands-on portion will cover basic repairs, restoration techniques, conservation, rescue tips and the recreation of patterns that are damaged beyond repair.

Supplies: Participants are encouraged to bring a vintage quilt in need of repair to discuss and begin work on during the workshop. A conservation kit is required and can be purchased directly from the instructor for $10.


Saturday afternoon, July 31 - FULL
1:30–4:30 p.m.
302 Searching for Clues

All Levels

This is a three-hour interactive fabric dating workshop. During this class students discover the clues hidden in their antique quilts and tops as we discuss trends, fabrics and patterns and styles over the last 200 years. There are lots of show and tell items and a wide variety of fabrics that span 200 years of American textile history.

Supplies: Participants are encouraged to bring two-three pieces to share and discuss during class. Digital cameras are welcome.

406 The Business of Being in Business

All Levels

This is a six-hour workshop for the professional quilter or anyone who is interested in making their mark in the quilting field. This workshop focuses on developing yourself professionally and promoting your business successfully. Information will be provided on goals, professional development, marketing, paperwork, business ethics, taxes, expansion opportunities and more.

Participants are asked to bring note taking supplies and any personal promotional literature they would like to share during our discussions.
